Wootton Bridge 1857 -1859
March 28th, 1858

Sunday 28th March 1858

Palm Sunday,  Julia went to Wootton Church. In the afternoon Mr.G.C. and I went to Ryde, we went through Quarr it was a beautiful walk.

I drank tea at Uncles about half past 6 o’clock, I went to Cousins William’s.  The dear little girls sang very prettily about 8.  Mr, Thrower, Cousin and I went and saw the national school rooms, it was a beautiful piece of building, we again returned to William’s about quarter to 9 o’clock.  Mr. G.C. called in, we had some refreshments, after which Mr.G.C. kindly escorted me home to dear old Wootton Villa, it was a delightful moon light night, and I enjoyed my jaunt very much indeed.

Note;- March 23rd The brown hen hatched 5 chickens.

March 1st, 1858

Monday 1st March 1858

We discovered that six of the eggs we sat the hen on was barren, so that out of the 14 eggs we have only 8 chickens, but they are very healthy sweet little creatures. We heard that Mr. John Young was married a short time back to Mrs Rawlins at Ryde, Mr. Young is nearly 74 years of age. In the evening mother arrived home from Ryde, Uncle and Aunt still very ill. A tea party at Newport Bible Christian chapel.

February 25th, 1858

Thursday 25th February 1858

Mother received a letter from Fareham, Uncle Thomas also sent for Mother to come to Ryde as Aunt was very ill. In the afternoon I drove Mother in the donkey cart to Ryde, I called and saw Cousin William and family, they were all quite well but I am sorry to say Uncle and Aunt were both very ill, I arrived home about 5 o’clock. I then went into Newport for some bread. About half past 8 o’clock Mr.G.C. called to see us , we spent a very pleasant evening.

February 3rd, 1858

Rather wet day, in the evening Miss Moody and we went to the revival meeting at Wootton Bridge Old Wesleyan Chapel, we arrived home about 10 o’clock. The Sacred Harmonic Society held their second subscription Concert at the Victoria Rooms Ryde last evening, it was very well attended.

 

January 25th, 1858

Monday 25th January 1858

The Princess Royals wedding took place this afternoon about 1/4 to 1 o’clock at St James Chapel, St. James Palace. About 1300 children was treated to a tea in the Town Hall at Ryde.

In the evening there was a banquet held at the York Hotel. A ball took place in the Town Hall and a “soiree” was held at the Victoria Rooms by the masters and teachers of the various schools after the children had been dismissed, which added another feature to the general enjoyment. At Newport, the Royal wedding was celebrated by a tradesmen supper at the Wheatsheaf Inn, which was presided over jointly by Mr.Loosemore and Mr.Smith of St James Square. At the Star Inn, a sumptuous repast was provided by Mr B.Warburton and partaken of by nearly 70 guests of the principle inhabitants, the Mayor E. Way presided. At the National School rooms about 150 of the working men (with their wives and sweethearts) forming the Working Men’s Institute were regaled with plum cake and tea. An exhibition of the magic lantern formed a fund of amusement for the evening under the superintendence of  the Rev,.G.H.Conner. Several barrels of ale were distributed to the lower classes in remembrance of the joyful event by Messrs. Mews, brewers by ticket, allowing every family a certain quantity who applied for it. A ball was held at the Dragon Hotel, Mr Halls acting as master of ceremonies. There was also a dinner presentation to the inmates of the house of industry, by some unknown benefactor. It gave greatest satisfaction to all concerned in it.

Mother and Julia went to Ryde, they went and saw Miss Harriet Sherwood, Cousin William Uncle and Aunt and arrived home to Wootton Villa about 7 o’clock. I finished my crochet window blind.

December 22nd, 1857

Tuesday 22nd December 1857

Julia and I went to Newport. Miss Jane Rolf walked home with Julia.

In the evening The Ryde Harmonic Society held a concert at the “Victoria Rooms” Ryde.

December 16th, 1857

Wednesday 16th December 1857

I drove Mother part of the road to Ryde in the donkey cart. On my return I met Mr. Josiah Cooper and had a long gossip with him, after that, I saw Robert and after chatting a short time with him, I resumed my journey. I had not proceeded far before I met Mr.G,C., so I had quite an agreeable morning’s chat with my old friends. I also met Mr.J.G.G. on his pony, but we merely bowed to each other and passed on.

We did not go to the “Dramatic Amateur Performances” this evening, it was a very wet  and dark evening.

December 3rd, 1857

Thursday 3rd December 1857

Mother walked to Ryde.  I did a little millinery.

Mother arrived home by half past 6 o’clock.

November 16th, 1857

Monday 16th November 1857

Julia and I went to Newport. Grandma made us a present of two scarlet lindsay skirts. In the evening Mother returned from Ryde and brought us some wedding cake, Mr J Austin and Miss Masterman was married at Portsmouth and Mr Kapping and Miss Smith at Ryde. Mr G.C. called in to see us.
