Wootton Bridge 1857 -1859
August 22nd, 1858

Sunday 22nd August 1858

I went to Carisbrooke Church. I was very much pleased indeed. Julia went to Wootton Church. In the evening Julia went to Newport. Mr. W.W. D,  Mr. J.K. and Miss Dore came home with her. Grandma was very poorly.

August 15th, 1858

Sunday 15th August 1858

Julia went to Wootton Church. In the evening cousin William and I went to St. John’s Church at Newport.

August 8th, 1858

Sunday 8th August 1858

Grandma rather poorly, in the afternoon Julia drank tea at Mr. Dores Newport. Cousin William and Mr. Krothson drank tea with us, after tea they walked into Newport. They returned about 7 o’clock. Grandma very ill obliged to go to bed. Julia returned home about 9 o’clock accompanied by Mr. W.W. Dore.

August 4th, 1858

Wednesday 4th August 1858

The Queen left for Cherbourg. Julia went to the bazaar. Mr. Thorne came home with her. Mrs Dennis and Mrs Hunt went in a little donkey chaise.

Julia and the two pets went to Wootton Church. In the afternoon I and Annie went to St. Peters Church at Havenstreet, met cousin William and Mr. John Krothson Artist we were very much pleased with the Rev. Mr. Kent – Mr. Simkin came a short way home with us , when we arrived at Wootton Villa we found two of Julia’s friends came to drink tea with us so we had a very agreeable party of friends assembled, after tea Julia and her friends went for a walk. Cousin William and Mr. Krothson left about 9 o’clock and Julia’s friend about ½ past 9 o’clock.

I and Annie and Emma went to Shide for Grandma’s Interest money.  In the afternoon Julia and Annie went to Littletown Sabbath School Anniversary Tea party. Mr. W. Cooper and Mrs. Cooper called to see Grandma on their return from Rookley.

Julia went to Wootton Church. In the afternoon Miss Thorne drank tea with us. In the evening Julia and Miss Thorne went to Newport Church. Mr. R.C. called to see us.

July 13th, 1858

The portions of Newport and Carisbrooke cemetries which had been appropriated as burial places for those of the parishioners who die in Roman Catholic faith was consecrated this morning by the Rev. Dr. Grant the Catholic Bishop of the district in the Southwark diocese. The proceeding was of most imposing character. In the afternoon Julia went with the Miss Framptons to the Roman Catholic Chapel in Pyle Street where the bishop held a confirmation at the conclusion of his labours. He left for Swainston House to dine with Sir John Simeon Bart. Julia arrived home about 9 o’clock very pleased with her days enjoyment.

July 11th, 1858

The Bible Christian Anniversary at Brooke was celebrated when three sermons were presented by Mr. J  Tremelling, of Chatham. In the afternoon Julia drank tea with Miss J. Brading and heard two very eloquent sermons preached by Mr. D. Alford. Mr. Gatrell and Miss M. Whittington married.

July 8th, 1858

Thursday 8th July 1858

Julia’s 18th birthday. In the afternoon she went to Newport in the donkey gig. Miss Alice Frampton came home with her and her brother. In the evening Miss J. Brading called to see Julia and brought her a beautiful basket of fruit. I moved the table in the parlour so they had a little dancing and in truth I think they spent a very happy evening.

At St.John’s Church there was service and a concert on the opening of a new organ.
