Tuesday 13th July 1858

The portions of Newport and Carisbrooke cemetries which had been appropriated as burial places for those of the parishioners who die in Roman Catholic faith was consecrated this morning by the Rev. Dr. Grant the Catholic Bishop of the district in the Southwark diocese. The proceeding was of most imposing character. In the afternoon Julia went with the Miss Framptons to the Roman Catholic Chapel in Pyle Street where the bishop held a confirmation at the conclusion of his labours. He left for Swainston House to dine with Sir John Simeon Bart. Julia arrived home about 9 o’clock very pleased with her days enjoyment.

The annual R……… show was held at the Eight Bells Inn Carisbrooke yesterday. Last Monday the 7th the Isle of Wight and South Hants cricket clubs played a match on the Antelope Ground Southampton, yesterday Mr. Henry Bedstone of Brighstone was drowned while bathing at Appley near Ryde, he was 22 years of age, and on the 3rd inst Mrs George Ball on Coppins Bridge departed this life aged 54 years.

In the afternoon Miss Wall and I walked into Newport heard Mr Procter of  Nodehill Chapel preach a very excellent sermon in the circus. After tea we walked to Carisbrooke Mr. Mathews showed us all over the new cemetery, after resting for a short while we returned home. Cousin William and Mr Krother drank tea with Grandma, then they walked into Newport Church.
