Monday 16th November 1857
Julia and I went to Newport. Grandma made us a present of two scarlet lindsay skirts. In the evening Mother returned from Ryde and brought us some wedding cake, Mr J Austin and Miss Masterman was married at Portsmouth and Mr Kapping and Miss Smith at Ryde. Mr G.C. called in to see us.
Sunday 15th november 1857
Julia went to Wootton Church. In the afternoon I went to church.
Mr G. C drank tea with us and we spent a very happy evening. I did at the least.
Saturday 14th november 1857
Julia went to Newport, rode part of the way in Farmer Alfords fourwheel – she arrived home by 5 o’clock – I read a letter we then had supper and thus closed a very happy week.
Sunday 8th November 1857
I whent to Church, in the afternoon Julia went to church. Mr Maddoc preached his farewell sermon.
In the evening we read a little, played and sung a few tunes and after spending a very happy evening by ourselves we retired to rest.
Sunday 1st November 1857
Sacrament Sunday at St Edmunds.
In the afternoon Julia and I went to church. When we returned home we found Mrs Burrows, her son and Miss Harriet Sherwood, they arrived about 3 o’clock, we spent a very pleasant evening. Julia and I went as far as “Kite Hill” home with them, it was a most pleasant walk, on our return home we saw Miss Ann Cooper who came to the top of the hill with us, where meeting her sisters and a few more friends, who had been to Ebenezer Chapel she returned homeward with them, and we pursued our journey alone. We arrived home by 9 o’clock, then read a little, played a few tunes on the concertina and then retired to rest.
Saturday 31st October 1857
Mr. George Cooper repaired the veranda at the farm.
In the afternoon I was very poorly.
In the evening Julia and I went for a walk as far as Watergate. [Ed. Newport]
Sunday 25th October 1857
This morning we went to church, Mr Scot took his text from the 22nd Chapter of Luke and the latte clause of the 19th verse “This do in remembrance of me”.
In the afternoon it rained so we remained at home.
In the evening Julia and I played a few tunes on the flutina and the concertina. About 7 o’clock Mr.G.C. called in to see us, although he was very poorly caused the evening to pass very pleasantly. We retired to rest about 11 o’clock.
Saturday 24th October 1857
I and mother went to Newport, in the afternoon Julia went into Newport, she arrived home about 7 o’clock.
The performance of Ryde Theatre will I think conclude this evening.
Tuesday 20th October 1857
Mother and I went to Newport.
In the evening Julia and I went to chapel. Mr Pollard took his text from the 30th chapter of Job, 2 verse, it was an excellent sermon.
