Saturday 7th November 1857

Mother went to Ryde, I to Newport in the evening we received a note from Mother stating that Aunt  Ann was very poorly and that uncle wished her to stay at Ryde for a few days.

Fanny Wall went to Bonchurch to see her sister, Mr Robert Cooper went to Ventnor, at least I heard so.

Thursday 5th November 1857

Gunpowder Plot.

In the afternoon I went to Newport.

In the evening I am truly sorry to say that it was very unpleasant weather indoors, we spent the evening very different to what we did last year; not quite so merry.

Wednesday 4th November 1857

I sat down to needle work quite early this morning.

In the evening Mr.G.C. called in, we had a game of fifteen two and I spent a very pleasant evening.

Tuesday 3rd Novenber 1857

I went to Newport had “Daisy” shod.

In the evening we had a game of fifteen two.

Monday 2nd November 1857

I removed all my flowers indoors for shelter from the frost. Mother went to Newport.

I went for a walk, heard that Miss Jane Cooper was going to be married in a fortnight’s time. In the evening I did a little drawing.

Sunday 1st November 1857

Sacrament Sunday at St Edmunds.

In the afternoon Julia and I went to church. When we returned home we found Mrs Burrows, her son and Miss Harriet Sherwood, they arrived about 3 o’clock, we spent a very pleasant evening. Julia and I went as far as “Kite Hill” home with them, it was a most pleasant walk, on our return home we saw Miss Ann Cooper who came to the top of the hill with us, where meeting her sisters and a few more friends, who had been to Ebenezer Chapel she returned homeward with them, and we pursued our journey alone. We arrived home by 9 o’clock, then read a little, played a few tunes on the concertina and then retired to rest.

Mr. George Cooper repaired the veranda at the farm.

In the afternoon I was very poorly.

In the evening Julia and I went for a walk as far as Watergate. [Ed. Newport]

Friday 30th October 1857

Nothing particular occurred this morning, in the afternoon I went to Newport and did my marketing instead of tomorrow.

Thursday 29th October 1857

Mr Atrill brought grandma six bushels of swedes turnips. Mr William Wittington repaired the roof of Wootton Villa.

In the evening Wootton Bandsmen favoured us with a tune. Mother read aloud to us nearly the whole evening. We retired to rest about

Wednesday 28th October 1857

I did a little gardening. In the afternoon Mother went to Newport. I sketched St. Edmunds Church at Wootton. Miss Fanny Wall called to see us.

In the evening Mr G.C. called to see us, he very kindly pointed out the imperfections of my drawing for which was very much obliged to him but I am sorry to say that I think I quite offended him towards the close of the evening.
