Barnabas Linnington was buried at Wootton today –

I and Julia with Mr and Mrs Moore went to Wootton Church.

In the afternoon I read.

In the evening as no friend called in to see us we retired to rest about 1/2 past 9 o’clock.

Saturday 2nd January 1858

Mother and I went to Newport. Miss Ann Cooper left Wootton Bridge to go to Mrs. Yards to live as under house maid if I am not mistaken. On our return home from Newport I gathered a bunch of blackberries – Miss Matilda Shute departed this life today nearly suddenly, she was staying with Mr and Mrs Hollingsworth and family at Paris.

Day of Circumsision
I went to Wootton Church Mr. Scot preached from the 90th Psalm and 12 verse. I spent a very happy day.

Mr James Pittis departed this morning for London. Mr. Barnabus Linnington* departed this life yesterday afternoon. In the evening Julia and I went to post – I forgot to mention that we received an invitation this morning from Cousin William to attend “Mass” next Sunday morning at the Catholic Chapel but being prior engaged we were obliged to decline the invitation.

I went to Newport.

In the evening we a party of friends to drink tea spend the evening and supper with us, we spent a real merry evening. They departed about a 1/4 to 12 o’clock.

Mother and I went to Newport.

In the evening Julia and I went for a delightful walk.

Monday 28th December 1857

Julia and I went as far as Woodside and round by Chapel Corner, we called and saw Mrs. Tharle. We arrived home by 1/2 past 5 o’clock. In the evening I did a little drawing. Mr and Mrs. Bignall returned to Freshwater.

Sunday 27th December 1857

Julia went to Whippingham Church with Mr and Mrs Moore I went to Wootton Church. In the afternoon Julia and I went as far as Binstead Church. We went by Quarr Abbey and home by Quarr Hill. It was a very beautiful walk. On our return we met Mr. W C L and his friend. We was very tired when we arrived home. About 8 o’clock I retired to rest.

We saw the bandsmen pass by on their way to Niton or elsewhere – St. Helens Tea Party. Julia drank tea with Mr and Mrs Moore I was invited but could not conveniently leave until 7 o’clock.
