Wednesday 16th June 1858

The Ryde Band played for the first time this season on the Esplanade near the Castle. Julia drank tea with Fanny at Woodhouse.

Tuesday 15th June 1858

I went to Newport Rev. Mr. Beston called to see Grandma on his way to Mr. Scots. In the evening Mr.G.C called to see us.

Monday 14th June 1858

Mrs Sanders of Fernhill after a protracted illness departed this life aged 70 years. A party of Wootton Villagers went to the sheep shearing supper at Combley.

Sunday 13th June 1858

Mr. A. Cooper and family spent the day at Wootton. I went to Wootton Church. In the evening Julia went to Newport arrived home by 9 o’clock.

Saturday 12th June 1858

Miss Margaret Bay from Alverstone in the parish of Whippingham was taken into custody upon suspicion of murdering her infant on Saturday the 5th June.  She was committed to take her trial at the next assizes Winchester.

Friday 11th June 1858

An Horticultural exhibition took place yesterday at Carisbrooke Castle, it was exceedingly well attended the whole of the day. In the evening I finished painting Grandfathers headstone. Mr. C. Pike cut the garden hedges – we heard that Mr. James Baker has in his garden at St.Paul’s View Cottages Cross lanes a tremendous cabbage measuring upwards of nine feet and proportionally high, he has also two others which to all appearance will soon arrive at the same size.

Thursday 10th June 1858

The brown hen hatched 8 little chicks. We heard that Mrs. J B had an addition to her household about the 27th of May, but it did not live but a short time.

Wednesday 9th June 1858

The annual R……… show was held at the Eight Bells Inn Carisbrooke yesterday. Last Monday the 7th the Isle of Wight and South Hants cricket clubs played a match on the Antelope Ground Southampton, yesterday Mr. Henry Bedstone of Brighstone was drowned while bathing at Appley near Ryde, he was 22 years of age, and on the 3rd inst Mrs George Ball on Coppins Bridge departed this life aged 54 years.

I went to Newport, sold my chickens for 3s.9d a couple. I then went to Wootton Church and gave the headstone another coat of paint

I went to Newport. I then went to Wootton Churchyard and gave Grandfathers headstone one coat of paint. In the evening Fanny came to see us.
