March 21st, 1858

Sunday 21st March 1858

I went to Wootton Church in the morning and afternoon. In the evening Julia went for a walk, Cousin William and Mrs? called to see us. We spent a very pleasant evening.

March 14th, 1858

Sunday 14th March 1858

Julia went to Wootton Church. It was wet in the afternoon so I did not go out the whole of the day, but we spent a very happy day at home. Mr Adam Cooper at Wootton.

March 7th, 1858

Sunday 7th March 1858

Mother, Julia and I went to Wootton Church, we all received the Sacrament, Julia and I having decided to try for salvation.

February 28th, 1858

Sunday 28th February 1858

I went to Wootton Church, saw Miss Ann Cooper. In the afternoon Cousin William and Mr. Trotter drank tea with us, after tea Cousin William and his friend, and Julia went into Newport church. They arrived home about 9 o’clock.

February 21st, 1858

In the afternoon we went to Wootton Church. In the evening to St. Thomas’s Church, Newport, we had a very pleasant walk home.

February 14th, 1858

A very wet day. In the afternoon I went to Wootton Church. Mr.G.C. drank tea with us.

In the evening we went to Littletown Chapel, Miss Jane Wall was there.

Mother received a letter from Bristol. Mrs Newbury of Wootton Bridge confined with a son.

February 7th, 1858

 Sexagesima Sunday* Julia and I went to Wootton Church, Mr Maddoc it was a delightful sermon,

In the afternoon Mr.G.C. and Miss. J. Brading drank tea with us, after tea we walked into St Thomas’s Church, Newport, arrived home about 9 o’clock.

* No longer officially marked by the Catholic Church, Sexagesima Sunday still shows up in some liturgical calendars. It is the second Sunday before the start of Lent, which makes it the eighth Sunday before Easter. Traditionally, it was the second of three Sundays (Septuagesima is the first and Quinquagesima is the third) of preparation for Lent. Sexagesima literally means “sixtieth,” though it only falls 56 days before Easter.

Very wet weather, in the afternoon Julia went to Wootton Church. In the evening we remained at home.

Sunday 24th January 1858

I and Julia went to Wootton Church. Grandma very ill with the spasms.

In the afternoon Mrs Read sent Grandma a recipe for the prevention of spasms.

In the evening Julia and I went to Newport for some medicine for Grandma.
