Julia and I went to Wootton Church – In the evening we went to St Thomas’s Church in Newport. Mr. Connor a very instructive sermon about Paul and his conversion; we arrived home about 9 o’clock.

Julia and I went to Newport. Miss Jane returned from Compton.
Saturday 6th January 1858
Mother and I went to Newport, it was a very wet and unpleasant ride. Mother went to the supervisors office, she arrived home about 4 o’clock.
Saturday 2nd January 1858
Mother and I went to Newport. Miss Ann Cooper left Wootton Bridge to go to Mrs. Yards to live as under house maid if I am not mistaken. On our return home from Newport I gathered a bunch of blackberries – Miss Matilda Shute departed this life today nearly suddenly, she was staying with Mr and Mrs Hollingsworth and family at Paris.
Wednesday 30th December 1857
I went to Newport.
In the evening we a party of friends to drink tea spend the evening and supper with us, we spent a real merry evening. They departed about a 1/4 to 12 o’clock.
Tuesday 29th December 1857
Mother and I went to Newport.
In the evening Julia and I went for a delightful walk.
Thursday 24th December 1857
I went to Newport. In the evening Wootton Bandsman played six tunes to us. About 9 Mr. James Pittis called to see us on his return from London. Mr. Pittis Mr. Moore and Miss Ann Pittis also called in. We retired to rest about 1/2 past 10 o’clock.
Tuesday 22nd December 1857
Julia and I went to Newport. Miss Jane Rolf walked home with Julia.
In the evening The Ryde Harmonic Society held a concert at the “Victoria Rooms” Ryde.
Monday 21st December 1857
Mother and I went to Claybrooks Farm.
In the afternoon Julia went to Newport. About 4 o’clock M.G.C. and I went to Newport. It was the anniversary of the opening of St Thomas’s Church.
Sunday 20th December 1857
A wet morning, in the afternoon Julia read. I did a little drawing.
In the evening Mr.G.C. went to Newport Church. Robert called in (as he came from Chapel) to see us, about 9’oclock. Mr.G.C. and Mr J.C. returned from Newport, we sang and played a few tunes, and I spent a very pleasant evening.
