The anniversary of St Thomas’ Church celebrated by a teaparty in the national school room. About 4000 people sat down to partake of the various refreshments, after tea Mr. Connor read a Christmas Carol the interval was filled up by singing, the company departed very much pleased with their evenings amusement.

We received a note from Ryde this morning stating that Mother was very ill with the influenza, I went to Ryde in the donkey cart and brought her home.
Still very poorly, not able to go out.
A very wet day.
We are all very poorly indeed with the influenza*. * There was an Influenza Pandemic in the years 1857/8, this may explain the high number of deaths and illness that Mary records in her diary.
I went to Newport. In the evening Mr. W. W. D. and Mr. T. L. called in.
I washed the week’s clothes, Julia not able to get up till evening.
Julia very ill indeed.
Julia went to Wootton Church. Mother came to see us. In the afternoon W.W. D and F.L. called in. In the evening we went part of the way home with mother.
I went to Newport.
